Minimum liability insurance requirements in North Carolina

Under North Carolina law, the registered owner of an automobile must maintain continuous liability insurance coverage that meets minimum requirements of 30/60/25, as follows:

  • $30,000 bodily injury per person
  • $60,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 property damage

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage

Although minimum liability insurance is mandatory, there are still many drivers who fail to carry insurance as required. To combat this, North Carolina law also requires drivers to carry uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, which covers you, your family and passengers if you are in an accident caused by a hit-and-run driver or a driver with no insurance. As with liability insurance, the minimum coverage is 30/60/25.

Even when a driver does have the minimum policy, this small amount is often insufficient to cover costly medical bills. Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage, which is required for certain drivers, helps cover the costs of your injuries — but not property damage — if you are in an accident caused by a driver with too little insurance. UIM coverage ranges from 30/60 to up to $1,000,000 per person and per accident.

Recovering compensation from insurance companies

Figuring out which policy covers your accident can be extremely complicated and confusing. In addition, whether you are trying to recover compensation from the negligent driver’s insurer or your own policy, you may have difficulty obtaining a fair settlement. Insurance companies are businesses out to make a profit, and they do so by undervaluing or denying justified claims.

When you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured, hit-and-run or underinsured driver, our attorney and staff work diligently to help you recover the compensation you need. As experienced personal injury attorneys, we understand the real value of your claim and we deal with insurance companies on a regular basis, giving us insight into their decisions on policy claims.
